Youth Pathways to Emergency Services

Auckland Council Civil Defence Header

North Rodney Blue Light successfully conducted our new pilot programme partnering with Auckland Council Civil Defence and Emergency Management, local emergency services and affiliated volunteer organisations to provide a three day training workshop for youth aged 15-18 years.  The training was held in the last week of the term school holidays from Tuesday 18 July to Thursday the 20 July 2017 and was FREE to successful applicants.  It is our intention to run this very rewarding programme once a year.

What is the Youth in Emergency Services Project?

The Youth in Emergency Services (YES) project is designed to strengthen the connection between young people and their communities by way of a hands-on introduction to the work of the emergency services in their area. The project’s aims range from enabling young people to acquire the skills necessary to contribute to a community response in an emergency, to an increased sense of connection between young people and their community.

Purpose: Opportunity to explain volunteering and career pathways to any services listed below:

  • St John Ambulance ( opportunity to obtain a First Aid Certificate)
  • NZ Fire Service
  • NZ Police
  • Coastguard NZ
  • NZ Defence Force
  • Auckland Council Civil Defence
  • Red Cross

What’s involved?

The YES programme offers tasters from various local emergency services, such as the Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management, NZ Fire Service, NZ Police, NZ Defence Force, St John, NZ Red Cross, Coastguard and Blue Light.  The youth candidates attend a three day workshop, hosted by the different emergency services.  The experience will enable the candidates to apply their learning in simulated emergency scenarios.

The three day free training workshop includes :-

  • A certificated NZQA First Aid certificate
  • Hands on experience for the youth to put their First Aid training into practice scenarios
  • Workshops from Triple One Care, NZ Fire Service, St Johns Ambulance, NZ Defence Force, NZ Police, NZ Red Cross, Coast Guard, Auckland Civil Defence Management team, Rapid Relief Team, NZ Surf Life Saving, and Tzu Chi Foundation.

What makes a great candidate?

We are looking for young people aged between 15 –18 years old who are motivated, keen to learn, responsible and enjoy tackling new challenges. They should be motivated and committed, have good self-management skills, be available to attend the 3 day workshop and be in good health and physically able to carry out the emergency service duties.

Youth who have been on previous Blue Light activities such as Lifeskills camps should apply.

When is it happening?

Last week of term two holidays (July)

What is the cost?

There is no cost to youth participants.

Location

Orewa and Hibiscus Coast surrounding venues.  Transport from local Police Stations can be arranged.

Nomination form will be available here in May-June for the 2018 programme.
